Deaf boy told by school to change his name because signing it violates their weapons policy

is one of those stories that has me shaking my head, jaw hanging in disbelief.  It's one thing to have a policy that disallows kids from bringing knives, guns, or other weapons to school. When a three year old is forced to change his name because sticking out his thumb and index finger is seen as offensive or threatening, it's time to change the policy instead.

Hunter Spanjer says his name with a certain special hand gesture, but at just three and a half years old, he may have to change it.

"He's deaf, and his name sign, they say, is a violation of their weapons policy," explained Hunter's father, Brian Spanjer.

Grand Island's "Weapons in Schools" Board Policy 8470 forbids "any instrument...that looks like a weapon," But a three year-old's hands?

"Anybody that I have talked to thinks this is absolutely ridiculous. This is not threatening in any way," said Hunter's grandmother Janet Logue.

"It's a symbol. It's an actual sign, a registered sign, through S.E.E.," Brian Spanjer said.

S.E.E. stands for Signing Exact English, Hunter's sign language. Hunter's name gesture is modified with crossed-fingers to show it is uniquely his own.

AFL-CIO demands "Second Bill of Rights" securing full employment, living wage, healthy future

This is related to the difference between a .  Basically, rights don't cost anything while commodities do.  Full employment, living wages, and a healthy future (whatever that means) are not rights.  The problem is that all of those things, while sounding great in concept, cost someone else in order to make them a reality.

The origin of the word "bacon"

the origin of the word "bacon."  Tasty, tasty bacon.

The word derives originally from the Old High German “bacho”, meaning “buttock”, which in turn derived from the Proto-Germanic “backoz”, meaning “back”.  By the 14th century, it found its way into Old French as “bacun”, meaning “back meat”.  And by the 16th century, it found its way into Middle English as “bacoun”, which referred to all cured pork, not just the back meat.

California union to parents: Knock off all the volunteering and stuff

The wife volunteers at our kids' school so this headline caught my attention. She has grown to love spending time in their classes, seeing how they behave in that setting, helping the young minds make connections. On top of that, the teachers love the help. It frees them up to do other things that they would not have had the time for otherwise.  reports:

In Culver City, Calif., a local union wants to  of — get this — parent volunteersat the local public schools. At several schools in the city, parents have banded together to form non-profit booster clubs to fundraise for and hire part-time teacher’s helpers, who also mostly come from the ranks of the parents themselves.

The local union — the Culver City Association of Classified Employees — is not OK with that kind of initiative. The union wants the parents to continue to fundraise, but to send the funds directly to the school district so the district can then hire union employees to fill the part-time positions. As the union’s scheme makes clear, the school district presently doesn’t have the money to hire anyone to fill the roles parents have voluntarily filled. The parent volunteers aren’t stealing existing jobs from union employees.

Plan to Balance Budget in 5 Years--Eliminate Education, Energy, Housing, Commerce Departments

A serious budget with some serious cuts. It would reduce the size of governmentk put power back into the hands of states, and balance the federal budget in five years. :

Senators Rand Paul (R-Ky.), Mike Lee (R.-Utah) and Jim DeMint (R.-S.C.) introduced a budget plan on Thursday that would balance the budget in five years and pay down $2 trillion of the national debt in 10 years.

The plan includes spending cuts, entitlement reforms and tax reforms.

Paul said that the “Platform to Revitalize America” is the only plan consistent with the balanced budget amendment Republican advanced in the U.S. Senate because that amendment requires that Congress balance the budget in five years.

The plan eliminates the Department of Commerce, the Department of Education, Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Department of Energy.

“By eliminating departments we don’t have to make as significant of cuts in other areas,” Paul said.

“So entitlement reform could be more gradual because we eliminate some departments that we think should be done by the states and the localities,” he continued.

Other comprehensive steps to scale back the size of the federal government include selling off excess federal properties and land and defunding duplicative agencies.

Girl Scouts complaining that cookie sales are down due to rumor tying them to Planned Parenthood

I saw yesterday in our local news and thought back to when the "rumor" first came to my attention ().

The rumor started two years ago and connects the Girl Scouts to Planned Parenthood.

The CEO of the Silver Sage Girl Scouts Council, Shelli Rambo Roberson says the rumor has been fueled by social media sites and blogs, and for some reason, it's gaining traction this year.

Roberson says the rumor started at a global forum in Europe about the status of women in the world.

“Out of that came a rumor that there was some training given to girls from Planned Parenthood, and there is absolutely no merit to that,” said Roberson.

The rumor claims sexually explicit information was given to the Girl Scouts by members of Planned Parenthood.

“There's no partnership or interaction between Girl Scouts and Planned Parenthood,” said Roberson.

Really? Hmm...

They are the future of the country, and they appear to need some help

Yikes! I can't tell if they haven't been taught well, or if they just don't care. Either way, it's scary.
